Week 7 of Winter/Spring from Valley Flora!

In the CSA share this week:

  • Purple Sprouting Broccoli - a motherlode of it!
  • Sprouting Cauliflower
  • Purple Potatoes
  • Leeks
  • Baby Radishes
  • Rainbow Chard
  • Green Cabbage
  • Cebollitas
  • Baby Lettuce Mix
  • Pea & Sunflower Shoots - a jumbo bag!

Marvel of all marvels, somehow there is still colorful abundance despite the big flood! Our sincere thanks to those quick-growing radishes, tall-statured purple sprouting broccoli and cauliflower plants, and to our greenhouse manager, Sarah, who has cranked up the dial on micro mix production so we could bring you almost a full pound bag of blended pea and sunflower shoots this week. Jackpot!

Our thanks also goes out to so many of you who have sent kind words of support and some totally unexpected contributions to help us get back on our feet (including one dear VF supporter who emptied his change jar and cashed in all his tip money for the farm's recovery)! In general we have a hard time accepting gifts. As I explained to a long-time CSA member, farming is the perfect occupation when you're wired this way because you have to work hard for every single dollar you earn. It's some bizarre addiction to an "honest" living. But at some point along the way I was counseled by someone older and wiser that receiving a gift with grace is also a gift to the giver. So although she doth protest, she also is trying to practice the act of humble gratitude. :) Your support, whether it be moral or financial or both - plus a sunny forecast - has us poised to start rebuilding the deer fence next week, begin repairs on the equipment shed, and catch up on three weeks of transplanting and fieldwork that have been delayed by rain.

Spring is always a bit of a wild ride and this one is starting off with a bang. Let 'er buck!
