Happy Hens at Valley Flora!
Jen and Teresa, two of our awesome VF crewmates, teamed up together this season to start a little pastured egg side-business at the farm. Starting in June they began retrofitting an old trailer frame that was rusting away in a corner of the farm.
After many weekends and late evenings of running power tools, voila, they turned it into a mobile chicken coop!
Then, by cover of darkness they rustled some hens, purchased from Sondra Aguirre who used to supply eggs to the farmstand and has been downsizing her operation. They set the flock up with electric netting so the hens can graze on our fallow fields and forage for all things delicious: grass, insects, and all the veggie scraps a chicken could possibly eat.
It's been so fun to watch their project come to fruition and see another little farming enterprises bubble up at Valley Flora thanks to the passion and energy of young, aspiring farmers. So proud of them! And believe it or not, we're kinda loving the new early morning rooster soundtrack. It pairs nicely with the braying donkey.....:)
