  • Cilantro
  • Carrots
  • Eggplant
  • Fennel
  • Lettuce
  • Red Onions
  • Sweet Peppers
  • Asian Pears - The variety is Nijiseiki, sweet & juicy! We're having a bumper Asian Pear year and hope to bring you a sampler of all four of our varieties in the coming weeks!

I'm back from the beautiful Wallowas, a horsepacking trip that skewed slightly more eventful than usual: we were 17 miles deep in the wilderness when the rain and thunderstorms rolled in on Sunday, 9/13. Hours later, my mare, Lily, started suffering from colic, and in our attempts to keep her moving through the storm in hopes of saving her life she kicked me in the chest. The good news? The horse survived, we were able to finish out the last three days of our trip, and when I got home I learned that I only had one - not two - broken ribs!

A broken rib and doctor's orders not to lift anything would be a whole lot worse news in September - the heaviest hefting time of year - if it wasn't for our new pallet fork set-up on the tractor. This year our whole crew is enjoying the miracle of hydraulics as we bring the winter squash harvest in using macro bins. These pallet-sized bins slide onto the tractor forks, enabling us to drive through the field and load each squash variety into a macro, stack the macros in our greenhouse for curing, and then snap a lid on for fall/winter storage. You'll be seeing winter squash in your CSA tote soon, maybe as early as next week.

With real rain in the forecast, we're in high gear this week to bring in the rest of the squash, dig as many potatoes as possible, and try to get ground prepped and seeded to winter cover crop. The Fall dance with changing weather, which is often a sprint against rain, has begun!
