Week 6 of Winter: It’s Spring!

In the CSA Share this Week:

  • Leeks - last of the season
  • Hakurei Turnips - first of the season
  • Artichokes - first of the season and extra-early
  • Winter Lettuce Mix - last of the season from our greenhouses
  • Cabbage Raab - succulent shoots from our overwintered cabbage
  • Purple Sprouting Broccoli - a mountain of it :)
  • Spinach - a double share, great for cooking
  • Cauliflower - monster heads
  • Micro Mix
  • Painted Purple Potatoes

It's a parade of purple, green and white this week as winter meets spring on the farm. We're saying farewell to certain winter staples, like leeks, but a happy hello to hakurei turnips, our first artichokes, purple sprouting broccoli and spinach galore. We've been having a weeknight dinner love affair with winter cauliflower the past two weeks, thanks to some stellar recipes from NY Times Cooking. I highly recommend these two, which will put your massive head of cauliflower to good use this week:

This is motherlode week for purple sprouting broccoli. You can keep it as simple as a quick steam, or roast at high heat with olive oil and salt. Or you can take it to the next level with any kind of recipe that calls for broccoli.

Field Updates

We're using these next few sunny days to get our first wave of transplants into the ground. We typically start transplanting outdoors the first week of April but it looks like we're gonna get rained out next week. Oregon Department of Agriculture's long-range forecast called for a warmer and drier February/March and a colder and wetter April, which might just prove true. That makes it a little trickier for us to get plants in the ground as spring gets underway but we'll be grateful for some "normal" Oregon weather after such a bizarre, warm "winter." With any luck, it might add up to some late hail mary snow in the Cascades, which is desperately needed for water supplies in other parts of the state.
