Week 19 from Valley Flora - Chile Relleno Time!

In this week's CSA share:

  • Carrots
  • Red Onions
  • Eggplant
  • Tomatoes
  • Sweet Peppers
  • Poblano Peppers
  • Hakurei Turnips
  • Dill
  • Head Lettuce
  • Zucchini
  • Nijiseiki Asian Pears

October is delivering some nick-of-time heat to ripen our peppers! You're getting a handful of sweet Italians this week, plus a couple fat poblanos - the go-to pepper for stuffing and making chile rellenos. Hakurei turnips are back for a fall run, with lots of other Brassica goodies on deck for the coming weeks: purple daikon, watermelon radish, purple cauliflower and more. Winter squash will also start showing up in your share soon (Acorns next week!).

When we're not busy digging like dogs to get the potatoes out of the ground, we've been clipping squash and loading it by the ton into macro bins for curing and storage. It's a lot of heavy lifting this time of year, but the satisfaction of packing our barn to the gills with good food for fall and winter makes it well worth the sweat effort. The amount of produce we send to the food banks and community fridges always spikes this time of year, thanks to the cornucopia of summer & fall crops colliding and all those potatoes that don't meet our Grade A standard.

We're out of cooler space due to a bumper spud crop, so you'll be seeing more potatoes in your share next week. We need to clear out some potatoes to make room for more potatoes :) - before the rain comes, someday.....

Also, a reminder that Abby's Greens Salad Shares ended last week - in case you missed the memo and are looking for that red salad cooler at your CSA site.

Savor the sweet golden light and fall-crisp mornings - such a beautiful time of year.
