Week 20 from Valley Flora - Winter Squash Debut!

In the CSA Share this Week:

  • Winter Squash - Night Shift Acorn & Starry Night Acorn
  • Carrots
  • Eggplant
  • FAT FALL FENNEL (this is the moment for fennel!)
  • Leeks
  • Sweet Peppers
  • Red Gold Potatoes
  • Head Lettuce
  • Lacinato Kale

On Rotation:

  • Broccoli
  • Purple Cauliflower
  • Tomatoes

I look forward all year to the purple cauliflower CSA picture...dang it makes a pile of produce pop! You'll either see it or broccoli in your share this week, more to come next week! The fall brassica field is shifting into high gear and we're yarding food out of there hand-over-fist these days: hakurei turnips, purple daikon and watermelon radish (coming soon to a CSA tote near you), broccolini (a fall trial crop, available at the farmstand on Wednesdays), abundant bunch greens, tight-beaded broccoli, wild and crazy romanesco. October is such a good time to masticate!

Also, not in your share but abundant and beautiful: U-PICK STRAWBERRIES! They're insanely good right now! U-pick is still going every Wednesday from 11:30 to 2:30 as long as the fun lasts (probably not tooooooo much longer - a week or two max - because we need to tear out the plants to make way for winter cover crop). I picked this little handful in 10 seconds last night....

In Search of A Unicorn

I'm on the hunt for a horse! I'm spreading the word far and wide because what I'm looking for is pretty special: a horse that's trained and steady in harness for all the farmwork we do around here, but also great on trail, mountain-ready, and eager to jump. My working mare, Lily, was diagnosed with navicular syndrome a few years ago. It causes occasional front-end lameness and limits her ability to work. Unfortunately her bouts of lameness have been getting more frequent so I need a third horse that can sub into the farm hitch as needed and also be fun under saddle for all the non-farming horse adventures I like to have. Ideally this horse will be a light-ish draft cross (for instance, Morgan-Belgian like my current team), between 5 and 10 years old, 15hh to 17hh, 1100 to 1300 pounds, well-muscled with a strong butt and sloped shoulder, level-headed, trained to ride and drive with a smooth gait and a sweet personality. I'm looking nationwide since these guys are hard to find on the west coast. Let me know if you've got one in your barn - it should look something like this (if only I could clone my sweet boy, Jack!):
