The cute little pumpkin in your share is in homage to Halloween BUT it's actually a pie pumpkin - ideal for baking. It's a special multipurpose variety we grow called Pie Pita, with good meat for cooking/baking AND hull-less seeds that you can roast into pepitas like this. We just barely pulled off the pumpkin production this year, starting with sourcing the seed. There was a seed crop failure for Pie Pita last year, and we only had a limited amount of old seed on hand. We planted all of that in the greenhouse but then, somehow, a mouse got into our sealed fortress of a germination chamber and mined out every last pumpkin seed from the trays (I guess even the rodents know a good pepita when they see one). Fortunately the mouse made a little cache of seeds in the bottom of the germ chamber, rather than eating them all, so I rescued all the seeds, replanted them and hoped for the best. We ended up with a paltry collection of seedlings, but lo and behold, they grew into hardy plants and produced exactly the number of pumpkins we needed for the CSA, with a couple to spare. Whew! Here's hoping for better seed crop success this year because we love those Pie Pita!
FREE STRAWBERRY U-PICK TODAY! Last day of the season, Wednesday 10/28....
This is it, the last day of strawberry U-pick for the year. What a long sweet season it's been! As a small token of our thanks for all your u-picking enthusiasm, the STRAWBERRIES ARE ON THE HOUSE TODAY! Come get your final fill for FREE between 11:30 and 2:30pm! Please bring your own boxes/bowls/bags to take them home in cuz we're pretty cleaned out of empty flats (the berries are yours for the taking but not our white buckets - please leave those at the farm as usual). We appreciate our little community so much, thank you for being the reason we do what we do on the banks of Floras Creek!
