Veggie Notes and Kitchen Tips for this Week:
- You're getting a full half pound of pea shoots in your share (they went a little nutty in the greenhouse this past week)! That means you have plenty to make Pea Shoot Pesto. They're also great in salads, sandwiches and wraps.
- The lacinato kale raab is at it's peak. Raab is the flower bud of any overwintered brassica - kale, collards, cabbage, and even brussels sprout stalks all start to bolt at this time of year as they attempt to flower and make seed. It's the final and most nutritious gift that these long-lived plants give us after a full and abundant year in the ground. Raab is delicious steamed or roasted with olive oil and salt until tender and crispy-browned at the edges. Spread them out on a sheet pan and roast at 400 degree, stirring and flipping part way through the cooking process. It doesn't take long for these tender shoots to sizzle their way to perfection, so stay close to your oven!
- Purple daikon are an amazing storage crop. These came out of the ground late last fall and have been tucked into our walk-in cooler since then. I recommend removing their outer skin with a veggie peeler - partly because they're less pretty after a few months in storage, and also because the sweetness of the daikon is within. I love these raw, with dip, in tacos, on burrito bowls, quick-pickled and sprinkled on sushi bowls, you name it.
- Celery - we're getting a winter celery bonus this year because it's been so warm. Usually a hard frost will knock out our celery plants before Christmas, but this year that bed is truckin' along happily, sending up steady new growth. The stalks aren't big, but they have good flavor - great in soup, stock, beans, tuna salad and more.
Just Another Thursday Night in Langlois: The California Honeydrops are Comin' to the Cheese Factory!
Enough about winter vegetables. Let's talk music and one of the best bands ever…The California Honeydrops will be coming to the Langlois Cheese Factory for 2 nights in May, 5/20 and 5/21! This is a rare treat since the band has risen to the heights of fame since they first played here 15 years ago, which makes them very hard to get these days. Good thing they have a soft spot for Langlois cuz they’re returning to one of their beloved downhome venues to play for us at long last!
The first night sold out in 48 hours but there are still some tickets left for Thursday 5/21. Don’t delay. You may not want to miss this!!

See ya on the dance floor!!!
Legislative Update: HB 4153
The legislative short session came to a close on Monday in Salem and despite all our best efforts, HB 4153 was signed into law by Governor Kotek. The good news is that all your testimony did make a difference towards improving the language of the bill. It still has major flaws and there are real concerns about how it will impact our EFU (exclusive farm use) lands, but they did remove the language that would have limited farmstand operations based on acreage and income. That's good news for our little local food system here on the Southcoast, and throughout the state. Thank you so much for leaping to action and engaging with the legislative process. Ya'll made me rightful proud to be a Southcoaster.
