Produce Update:
Purple Methley plums have snuck into the share thanks to a bumper crop in the orchard this year. Port Orford and Bandon members saw them last Saturday and our Wednesday pickup sites are getting them today. Strawberries are on pause this week as we catch up on maintenance in the berry patch (weeding and mole patrol) but will likely be back in the share again next week. Dense purple cabbages are weighing down the totes alongside our first summer onions - cute little Purplettes that are juicy and mild. This is the beginning of an onion lineup that should see us into December if all goes well, including specialty onions like Walla Walla Sweets, Red Long Torpedoes, Rossa di Milano reds, Cipollinis, three kinds of shallots, and our standby red and yellow storage onions.
This week is probably a wrap on broccoli in the CSA share until fall, but we have new potatoes to look forward to next week - a rainbow medley of reds, yellows and purples coming your way soon!
It looks like we're dealing with a greenhouse cucumber crop failure - a huge disappointment since cukes are a favorite crop for just about everyone (me included!), and because we've invested a tremendous amount of labor in our trellised indoor system since May. Over the past few weeks we've seen significant vascular wilt and leaf spot spread in our plants, which has severly hampered fruit production. We sent samples off to the OSU plant pathology lab two weeks ago to determine what we're dealing with and are still awaiting results. In the meantime we're planting out another big wave of cukes this week, so hopefully we'll be able to make up for the slim mid-summer cucumber offerings with some late summer/early fall abundance. There's always one crop or another that goes sideways in a season, which is why I love the diversity on our farm: when the cukes are stumbling, the plums are bumpin'!
So enjoy those plums (if you haven't already), and the rest of the bounty this week!
