In the CSA Share this Week:
- Broccolini
- Hakurei Turnips
- Red Spring Onions
- Yukina Savoy Tatsoi
- Baby Mizuna
- Head Lettuce
- Red Beets
- Bunched Spinach
On Rotation:
- Gold Zucchini
Holy moly, we've never had such big juicy overwintered onions as these! The yellow onions last week and this week's red ones were planted last fall. They grow slowly through the winter until May when they're triggered by long days to bulb up. This year they girthed up with gusto, perhaps with a little help from all that new flood sediment. You can use the green tops like green onions and enjoy the bulbs raw or cooked.
You're also getting a bunch of white Hakurei turnips - a delicate Japanese salad turnip that's buttery and crisp all at once and delightful eaten raw.
The hefty bunch of Yukina Savoy tatsoi (dark spoon-shaped leaves with white stems) is another kind of pac choi (bok choy), great for stir frying.
And the broccolini is my favorite broccoli thing we grow, with stems as sweet and tender as asparagus. We like roasting it at high heat tossed with a little olive oil and salt. Pull it out of the oven when the leaves are crispy-brown but the broccolini is still crisp-tender.
Farmstand & U-Pick Updates
Right now our farmstand is open Wednesdays only, 11:30 to 2:30 pm. You can pre-order produce and Farmstead's sourdough bread online at https://valley-flora.localline.ca/farmstand (the ordering window for the Wednesday farmstand opens Thursday morning and closes Sunday evening). We'll be adding Saturdays to the schedule sometime in the next couple weeks, stay tuned!
The strawberry U-pick is open Saturdays only, starting at 11:30 am. The berries are big and beautiful right now, but not cranking at full production just yet. This is a great time to come pick a bucket or two, but not quite the moment to fill your winter freezer. The patch has been getting picked out within an hour, so it's best to come when we open so you don't miss out. And REMEMBER, our strawberries produce ALL SUMMER LONG, INTO OCTOBER - so there's plenty of time to get your fill. If everyone is patient and kind there will be more than enough berries to go around! Please consider coming to do your big pick for jam or the freezer in August and September when the patch is under-picked and the fruit is uber-abundant and extra-sweet. Locals in the know wait until then cuz the berries are redder, even sweeter, and very plentiful (the u-pick scene in June/July can be a little more like a derby, don't say I didn't warn you!)..... :-)
We'll be adding Wednesdays to the U-pick schedule and putting berries in CSA totes as soon as the patch is producing enough.
Have a great week!
